Popular Korean drama My Love from the Star, which has a fantasy plot involving a handsome alien will soon be turned into a movie. In the drama, said alien who landed on Earth in the Joseon dynasty, falls in love with an actress in the 21st Century, 400 years later.
Since it started airing on SBS, the South Korean broadcasting station which produced the drama, two months ago, it has been so well-received in Asia that many broadcasting stations in China, Taiwan and Hong Kong have proposed to purchase the copyrights of the drama to do remakes.
With its sky-high TV ratings and to make the most out of the trend, it is said that Hong Kong Media Asia Films contacted SBS when the 5th episode was aired, to talk about the purchase of copyrights to do a movie.
However, SBS decided to take charge of the remake and hopes to work with partners in the Chinese, Hong Kong and Taiwanese film industry to tap into the Mandarin-speaking markets. Production for the movie is slated to start this year-end.
Huang Xiaoming, Taiwanese actors Mark Chao and Kai Ko have been recommended to play Kim Soo Hyun’s alien character Do Min Joon.
Although the initial plan was to cast Korean actress Jun Ji Hyun, the drama’s original actress, as the female lead again, there have been talks to create a new look for the drama, and a Chinese actress may be cast instead. Hong Kong’s film queen Shu Qi, has been strongly recommended by the Hong Kong Media Asia Films for the role.
Hong Kong Media Asia Films management said: “We are very interested in the My Love from the Star movie, and hope to buy the copyrights. We’ll decide on the cast if we really manage to seal the deal. Although we’ll like to work with Korea, it’s still too early to say much.”
Don’t disrespect Malcolm.
That’s the message the slain civil rights leader’s daughter wants to send to pop star Nicki Minaj, whose use of Malcolm X’s likeness for her latest single prompted a backlash.
“Ms. Minaj’s artwork for her single does not depict the truth of Malcolm X’s legacy, is completely disrespectful, and in no way is endorsed by my family,” Ilyasah Shabazz told the Daily News Friday, two days after the controversy.
Shabazz, one of six children by Malcolm X and Dr. Betty Shabazz, called on parents and educators Friday to teach their children about the country’s civil rights history.
“It is our family’s hope that the true legacy and context of Malcolm X's life continues to be shared with people from all walks of life in a positive manner that helps promote the goals and ideals for which Malcolm X so passionately advocated,” said Shabazz, author of the memoir “Growing Up X” and a motivational speaker.
The Queens-bred star apologized Thursday for posting artwork for her new single “Lookin A-- N----” that featured an iconic 1964 image of Malcolm X standing at a window holding an M1 Carbine for Ebony magazine.
She has since taken the art off social media and her site.
“That was never the official artwork nor is this an official single,” Minaj said in a statement Thursday. “I apologize to the Malcolm X estate.”
Across Harlem, meanwhile, local leaders were also angered over Minaj’s insensitive cover image.
“I’m angry because that’s not what he stood for,” said Jacob Morris, head of the Harlem Historical Society.
“For his image to be misused this way, it’s despicable,” Morris said of the picture, which shows the revered leader holding a rifle and peering through a window.
Morris described the image as one of self-defense because at the time the leader feared for his life.
But Morris said the damage has been done.
“Put up some money instead of some phony words,” said Morris, adding that Minaj should donate to a cause that the civil rights leader would have supported. “It’s disgraceful to attach the n-word to him — flat out.”
Harlem community organizer Iesha Sekou, who operates student workshops through Street Corner Resources out of Harlem Renaissance High School, was also appalled by the use of the image. She said some students at the school didn’t think the imagery and racial slur were offensive.
“I think it’s horrible,” she said. “Look at all of the work that Malcolm X did. For her to use his image and the language that she used, it’s major disrespect.”
Chris Moore, a historian at the Schomburg Center for Research and Black Culture in Harlem, where much of the civil rights leader’s manuscripts are housed, called Minaj “wrong-headed” for her decision to use the historic image.
“It’s more ignorant than disrespectful,” Moore said. “She should pick up a [Malcolm X] book — and her fans, too.”
Malaysian-Chinese actress Angelica Lee posted up a photo she took with Mandopop singer Fish Leong yesterday.
“Visiting the beautiful Mum-to-be, and had a lovely afternoon!” wrote Angelica, when she shared the picture which showed a heavily pregnant Fish with a huge swelling tummy.
Fish replied to her post and said: “A happy expectant Mum needs sisterly company the most! Love you lots!”
Netizens have started speculating that Fish may be expecting twins from the size of her belly, and some said: “Such a huge belly! It’s a sign that it’s twins!”
35-year-old Fish married Tony Zhao, 38, in 2010. Since last October, she has been reducing her workload in the hope of having a baby. When she finally conceived, she stopped work altogether and returned to Malaysia, where her mother could take care of her.
A friend even revealed earlier that she is expecting a boy, and it is a known myth that women who are pregnant with boys lose their good looks easily, but her friend complimented her instead: “How come you are still beautiful?”

Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis are engaged, E! News exclusively confirms.
Kunis was spotted shopping earlier today wearing a diamond ring on that finger, and a source tells us that she and her former That '70s Show costar are indeed planning to make it official.
She and Kutcher, who are pretty darn adorable together, have been dating for almost two years. That '70s Show fans were first treated to signs of Jackie and Kelso's real-life coupling back in April 2012, though it took a number of months for them to be more public with their romance.
"It's amazing," Kurtwood Smith, who played Red on the series, said of their relationship in November 2012. "They're both great people, so I'm happy for them."
In fact, at the time, Smith joked, "Maybe they should get married. We'll all go to the wedding and that could be the reunion. It'll be a reality show."
Well, the wedding part is underway. Let's get to work on that reality show
