The Biggest Loser trainer Bob Harper opened up about his sexuality on last night's episode of the show.
Harper decided to talk openly about being gay in an attempt to inspire contestant Bobby Saleem, who had not yet told his father about his sexual orientation.
"I come from a very strict Catholic background," Saleem said. "Homosexuality, in a sense, was wrong. I kind of hid it. It's something I kept from my parents, at least my dad. I always felt there was something wrong with me."
Harper told viewers that he hasn't really spoken about his sexuality on the show before, but said that he wanted to discuss it with Saleem to show that he "doesn't have to live in shame".
"I totally understand what you're talking about," he told Saleem. "I totally get it. I'm gay. I knew a very long time ago I was gay, and the family I grew up around was very much the same - there was so much repression there.
"I think when I 'came out' when I was 17 years old, it was one of those kind of things where I realized that there were going to be so many obstacles. But being gay doesn't mean being weak. Being gay doesn't mean being less than anybody else. It's just who you are."
Harper also encouraged Saleem to tell his father about his sexuality, suggesting that it would "change the path" of his life.
"I'm scared I'll be a disappointment to him because I am the eldest, I am the only son," Saleem replied. "I feel he's had different expectations of me, and I don't think I can meet that expectation."
However, Harper suggested that Saleem's father seems like a "good" and "smart" man, adding: "If he's anything like you, I think he's going to accept you the way that you are. I think it's going to be okay."
Saleem appeared to appreciate Harper's remarks, saying: "I think it's great Bob has come out on television and to me, to help me move past my issues with it. Bob is right - I think I've been holding on to my secret for too long. I definitely will have a sit down talk with my dad and let him know I am gay."
