Lady Gaga has supported Katy Perry over accusations her recent performance at the American Music Awards was racist.

Perry performed her new single 'Unconditionally' at the awards ceremony on Sunday (November 24), while dressed as a traditional Japanese geisha and using imagery associated with different Asian cultures.

However, some viewers and certain media outlets have suggested that Perry's appropriation was inappropriate, with The New York Post saying she "exists in a blissfully ignorant bubble".

Lady Gaga has disregarded the criticism aimed at Perry and suggested that the media should leave the popstar alone.

"Maybe it's because 'Unconditionally' means you're supposed to love no matter what and geishas are paid?" Gaga told Radio.com.

"I think people are generally too sensitive and they should just leave her be, but you know, I'm not really the person to ask."

'Unconditionally' is the second single to be lifted from Perry's latest album Prism, which topped the UK and US charts last month.

Meanwhile, Lady Gaga's new album ARTPOP debuted at number one in the US and UK earlier this month.
