Jake Gyllenhaal was taken to hospital yesterday (November 13) after sustaining an injury on the set of his new film Nightcrawler.
The actor severely cut his hand and required stitches after punching a mirror as part of a scene.
A representative for the 32-year-old said: "Jake was indeed filming Nightcrawler when during the shooting of an intense scene his character purposefully banged his hand into the mirror.
"Unfortunately the mirror broke and Jake's hand was badly cut up. He got numerous stitches at the ER and was released. He already returned to set for work."
In the movie, Gyllenhaal plays Lou - a young man who is drawn into the world of Los Angeles freelance crime reporting.
He has lost a reported 20lbs for the role, revealing his huge weight loss at the annual 17th Hollywood Film Awards last month.
Speaking at the event, he said: "I knew that [Lou] was literally and figuratively hungry. [I was in a] mode where I was always a bit hungry."
The Bourne Legacy screenwriter Dan Gilroy makes his directorial debut with Nightcrawler, which also stars Kevin Rahm and Bill Paxton.
